Why MNU?

Foresight of MNU

  • Foreseeing the Future
Mokpo National University has faithfully fulfilled its role as a southwestern region's knowledge center for the past 60 years since its foundation and has always striven to keep pace with the changing demands of progress.
  • Keeping an eye on the sea, the repository of unlimited resources
Since our country, which is surrounded on three sides by sea, made its maritime potential clear, Mokpo National University has spared no effort to stay competitive in marine fields by extending its involvement in maritime research, education and cooperation.
In the process, we have striven to develop an all-inclusive academic stream of oceanography integrating humanities, sociology, natural science, engineering, arts and other fields, as a way to study the ocean and to consolidate its role in our future. Through various institutes and industry-academy cooperation joint projects, such as the Institute of Island Culture, which studies islands and marine culture ecosystems, we hope to increase our country's prominence in marine fields.
  • Fostering essential human talent
Talented individuals have a huge role to play in the world's ongoing development. We aim to do our part by fostering talented students into creative and productive members of society, while making our university a great place to study or work for everyone.

MNU Acceleration

  • Distinct growth
In Korea, with “national university” status comes great prestige, but also responsibility. MNU cherishes the challenge and strives to take a leading role in nurturing talented students to contribute to our nation's future growth. In the process, MNU has been growing faster than other universities and has become an integral part of higher education in Korea.
  • Ranked 2nd in “Research funds per professor” among Korean national universities
Mokpo National University has achieved its high ranking due to its generous research funding - approximately 100 million won per professor. In 2010 there were only two national universities offering funding in excess of 100 million won per professor - Seoul National University and Mokpo Nation University. On average, this constitutes almost twice the funding offered by seven national universities similar in size to our university.
  • The Offshore Wind-Powered Renewable Energy Talents Cultivation Center was rated as the best institute of its kind in Korea. Its selection, among 20 competing institutes at the 1st annual evaluation on June, 2010, has earned it 800 million won in prize money.
  • In the 2010, The Marine Engineering Department ranked second in the evaluation of academic discipline according to the Comprehensive University Evaluation of Joongang Ilbo University.
  • Highest competition for acceptance in Jeollanam-Do among freshmen, for the 2011 school year. 6200 students applied for acceptance with only 1,115 being offered admission. The respective, 5.57 candidates for 1 place, ratio confirms Mokpo National University's status as a leading university in Korea's southwestern region.
  • Designated as a university with an excellent admission office system for two years in a row.
Since the national assessment of admission office systems began in 2008, our admission office system was rated “excellent” leading to renewed efforts on our part to maintain this high standard for years to come.
  • Produced graduates who successfully applied at the Korea Cadastral Survey Corporation.
MNU's Department of Cadastral Surveys, which offers a unique four year program, has trained seven successful applicants for the 7th grade technical employment at Korea Cadastral Survey Corporation. This achievement maintains the department's tradition to produce successful applicants for these prestigious posts for seven consecutive years.
